Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Defences. Can't find what you're looking for? Email us at admin@defences.app

ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI. Defences is specifically built for Canadian law students with access to millions of Canadian cases (Supreme Court, Federal Courts, all provincial courts), IRAC-based exam grading, and teaching modes designed for legal education (Socratic Method, Deep Think, Quiz Mode). ChatGPT can't search Canadian case law databases or provide structured legal exam feedback.
Both! While we designed Defences primarily for law students preparing for exams, legal enthusiasts, paralegals, law clerks, and anyone curious about Canadian law can benefit. Our case search and AI tutor work for anyone learning Canadian law - no law school enrollment required.
Defences works for students at all Canadian law schools (UBC, U of T, Osgoode, McGill, Dal, UAlberta, UOttawa, Queen's, and 15+ others). Our case database and teaching methods are based on Canadian law itself, not school-specific curricula, so the platform adapts to your courses regardless of which school you attend.
Instead of giving you direct answers, Socratic Method mode asks guiding questions to help you discover legal principles yourself. For example, if you ask about negligence, the AI might respond: 'What duty do you think the defendant owed? What test would you apply?' This mirrors how many law professors teach and helps develop critical thinking skills.
Yes, but only to improve your learning experience. We store your exam answers and grades to track your progress across topics, identify weak areas, and personalize study recommendations. Your data is encrypted, never shared with third parties, and you can request deletion anytime by emailing ceo@defences.app. We do not share your answers with your law school or professors.
The free tier includes 20 AI messages per month, 5 practice exam questions, and limited case search queries. This is enough to try the platform and see if it fits your learning style. Paid tiers ($20/month Student, $45/month Professional) offer unlimited usage, faster responses, and advanced features like personalized study plans.
Absolutely. No contracts, no cancellation fees. Cancel from your dashboard with one click, effective immediately. If you cancel mid-month, you keep access until the end of your billing period. We're confident you'll find value, but we don't believe in trapping students in subscriptions.
We get it - law school is expensive. If you're struggling financially, email ceo@defences.app with a brief explanation. We offer discounted rates and sometimes free access on a case-by-case basis. We're students too, and we'd rather help you succeed than have price be a barrier.
Not in the near future. We're laser-focused on being the best AI tutor for Canadian law students. Expanding to other subjects would dilute our case database quality and legal expertise. If you're looking for general academic help, there are great tools like ChatGPT or Quizlet. We're staying in our lane: Canadian law.
Instead of complex Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), just type natural language queries like 'negligence cases involving slip and fall in Ontario.' Our AI searches millions of Canadian cases across all courts (Supreme, Federal, provincial), extracts relevant passages, and presents them with citations. It's like having a research assistant who's read every case in Canada.
